Porattom attacks secret Reliance Godown in Kerala

Thrissur: Activists of Porattom today attacked a secret godown of Reliance in Thrissur district of Kerala. The activists who carried out surprise attack smashed computers and printers at the godown which had been functioning here at Kuriachira. After the attack Porattom activists including P.J. Manuel courted arrest.

It is pointed out that the attack exposed the double standards of CPI(M) led LDF governemnt which had done all assistance to function the godown smoothly even while conducting agitations against unprecedented price rise in the state. At a time when the people of Kerala is reeeling under price rise Reliance had been hoarding food items in their godown.

Bob Marley Cultural Fest 2010

Bob Marley has been, the world over, an inspiration for those who upholds and take pride in their own culture. At a time when imperialist globalization is literally wiping out native cultures, memories of Bob Marley and the cultural resistance put up by him is worthy to commemorate. Cultural resistance becomes all the more important in India as the Home Minister of India himself is out there with his Operation Green Hunt to teach the Dalits and Adivasis some lessons in upper caste Hinduism and thereby continue the centuries old exploitation of these people.

Bob Marley Cultural Fest to be held at Comrade Abu Square at Fort Kochi (near the beach)from 9th to 11th this month is a platform for cultural activists and musicians who declines to conform to the existing establishment to get together and perform and express their views. Bob marley commemoration and cultural fest

28 years may have passed since the voice of Bob Marley, the singer of the downtrodden, died down. But the resonances it created are still strong enough to rekindle memories; memories that struggle against forgetfulness.

On account of Marley's death anniversary and in the backdrop of the oppressed class opening up new battle front everywhere in the world, Bob Marley Cultural Collective, on 10th and 11th this month organises a Bob Marley Commemoration and Cultural Fest at Fort Kochi. Suresh Badal, programme convenor of the fest told Socialist Platform that its the general political developments in the contemporary world that make the memories of Marley all the more relevant. "At a time when Dalits as well as all other oppressed classes get up and stand up to put up stiff resistance against all kinds of oppressions and discriminations, we believe that it is quite relevant to remember Marley and his legacy. Rastafari, which explored the black people's identity gain importance now as the jaggernautof globalisation is still on the roll trampling down all kinds of native cultural symbols besides making lives of people more and more miserable. However searching identity doesn't mean a return journey, rather its a fresh energy of resistance as it is obvious that the liberation of the oppressed can be made only through class struggle." Suresh said.

Protest Meet against State Terror

As part of a campaign against the increasing state terror, Bharanakuta Bheekarathavirudha Samithi (Committe against State Terror),an alliance of various organisations including Janakeeya Manushyavakasa Prasthanam, PUCL,Porattom, Solidarity, CHRO and Democratic Dalit Movement, convenes a meeting at Palakkad on 2nd November. The meeting to be held at Palakkad Employee's Co operative Society Hall at 10.a.m will be inagurated by noted Tamil writer A.Marx. P.Surendran will deliver the key note address.

Adv.P.A.Pouran, K.P.Sethunath, Sunny M.Kapikad, Adv.John John, Dr.Abdul Salam, M.N.Ravunni, Ajayan Mannur, Dr.P.G.Hari are among those who will speak on the occassion.

In the backdrop of Porattom general convenor M.N.Ravunni's arrest the other day here in Kerala, Janakeeya Manushyavakasa Prasthanam (People's Human Rights Organisation)has decided to launch a statewide campaign against the increasing police excesses and state terror in general. Adv.Tushar Nirmal Sarathy, convenor of the organisation said that as part of the campaign, a meeting will be held on Tuesday at 2.p.m (07-10-08) at PWD Rest House in Palakkad. He asked individauls and representatives of various organisations to attend the meeting , which is aimed at developing a unity among democratic forces in the fight for human rights.He also asked those who coudln't make it to the meeting to send him mail showing their opinion on being a memebr of the joint campaign committe.
